DDi runs the Basic Fire Fighting course in Pretoria in two ways. Your team can be trained onsite at your workplace anywhere in Pretoria, from R605 per person for groups of 20 or more (R790 for 5 to 9), excl. VAT. One or two people can join a public class at our Centurion venue for R890 per person. Either way it is a 4-hour, OHS Act compliant course with a practical on a real extinguisher.
Two Ways to Do the Course in Pretoria
Onsite at your Pretoria workplace
For a group, we come to you, anywhere in Pretoria and in Centurion and Midrand next door. Your fire team learns on the premises it has to protect, so the questions can be about your own building, exits and equipment. We bring the training extinguishers, including some that are faulty on purpose, so your team learns what to look for when it inspects its own. Request a quote with your address, the number of people and a preferred date.
Public class at our Centurion venue
Individuals and small groups join a public class at our Centurion venue, 99 Hornbill Avenue, Rooihuiskraal, not far off the N1. The class is a half day, 8:30am to 1pm. Pick a date, book your seat and pay securely online on the public class bookings page.

What Your Team Does in 4 Hours
- Registers and enrolment: attendance registers signed and enrolment forms completed.
- Theory: the classes of fire, which extinguisher for which fire, and the PASS method (pull, aim, squeeze, sweep).
- Practical: everyone discharges a real extinguisher, so you know there is no explosion, just a release of dry chemical powder. We don’t light open fires.
- Inspecting extinguishers: CO2 and dry chemical powder (DCP) extinguishers, some of them faulty on purpose, so you learn to spot the problems.
- Assessment: a practical assessment, then a short theory assessment, signed by the assessor.
The full outline is on the Basic Fire Fighting course page.
Your Certificate
Basic Fire Fighting is OHS Act compliant training. It covers what the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and the General Safety Regulations, regulation 13J (fire precautions and means of egress, 2025) expect of the people who fight a fire at work. Delegates found competent get their certificate signed onsite at the end of the training, as long as we have their ID copy before the day.
The law sets no fixed validity for a fire fighting certificate. Your company’s internal policy, usually in its health and safety file or SHE policy, decides when people refresh. DDi recommends refreshing Basic Fire Fighting every year.
How Many Fire Fighters Does Your Workplace Need?
No regulation sets a number. DDi recommends 3 trained fire fighters for every 50 staff, because they work as a team and one of them can be absent. Work out your own number with the calculator on the Basic Fire Fighting page, and plan your evacuation with Evacuation Warden training.
