Got questions about our SHE Rep training?

Connect With Us

People are often scared at the start. They ask: can I get into trouble, will I have the time, can I be sued? After the training they understand the link they are between the people and management, their role is clear, and they feel equipped.

What the day looks like

A balance of theory and practical, because competence is the knowledge, the skill and the ability to apply it in a real-life scenario. First time? Don't stress: we take you through the process.

  1. Registers and enrolment: attendance registers signed and enrolment forms completed.
  2. Theory: your role as the link between the people and management, and the parts of the OHS Act that apply to you.
  3. A visual walkthrough of the workplace, doing the checks with our checklists, so you get the experience.
  4. A practical assessment, then a short theory assessment, signed by the assessor.
  5. Certificates signed once the assessor and facilitator are happy.

How many SHE reps do I need?

The minimum under section 17 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, for one workplace.

Type a number, or step by 10. Count everyone who works at this site.
What kind of workplace?

Holding a safety committee? The OHS Act requires one once you have two or more SHE reps (section 19(1)), and the members the employer nominates may not outnumber the SHE reps on it (section 19(2)(c)). DDi's practice goes one step further: have at least one more SHE rep than the managers who sit on it. One manager means two reps, three managers means four.

OHS Act sections 17 and 19

Section 17(1): every employer with more than 20 employees at any workplace must designate health and safety representatives in writing, for a specified period, for that workplace or sections of it. Section 17(5): in shops and offices, at least one representative for every 100 employees or part thereof; in all other workplaces, at least one for every 50 employees or part thereof. An inspector may direct the employer to designate more (section 17(6)).

Section 19(1): where two or more health and safety representatives have been designated, the employer must establish one or more health and safety committees. Section 19(2)(c): the number of persons nominated by an employer on a committee shall not exceed the number of health and safety representatives on that committee.

Always so impressed with the high standard of training from DDi OHS. Amanda, our SHE Rep Course Instructor conducted the programme in a very practical way, making the theory easy to cover and apply to our specific field. Can highly recommend this institute! We eagerly await our next training session with DDi OHS!
★★★★★Chloe Pretorius
DDI provided practical and informative training to our OHS representatives and First aiders. The presenters are professional and knowledgeable. The customer relations contact did a great job providing the necessary information, taking care of administration and logistical arrangements. We will most certainly make use of their services again to train our staff in the OHS environment.
★★★★★Dion Botha
