About the course
When the alarm goes, someone has to know the plan, check that every area is clear and get people to the assembly point calmly. That is the job of your evacuation wardens, often called fire marshals.
The OHS Act and the General Safety Regulations, regulation 13J (2025), expect employers to plan for fire and other emergencies, keep escape routes open and make sure people know what to do. This course gives your wardens the knowledge to play their part:
- Emergency plans and planning procedures: what a workplace emergency plan covers, and the warden’s role in it (see what an evacuation plan must contain).
- Understanding fire and fire prevention: how fires start and spread, and how to stop them starting.
- Classes of fire and extinguishing agents: which extinguisher to use on which fire.
- Fire equipment: inspecting and looking after the equipment so it works when it is needed.
- Safety signs: reading and placing the signs that guide people out.
- Drills and evacuation: fire fighting drills and practising a safe evacuation, step by step as in our fire drill procedure for South African workplaces.
The course also includes an example of a fire marshal appointment letter.
